Fitting Rear Sight

Just expanding on the previous blog entry on fitting a 10-8 rear sight to a Springfield.

I swapped out the Heinie rear sight for a 10-8.

Disclaimer:  I'm not a professional, but this is how I do it.

With the sights side by side, you can see the size difference between the new 10-8 sight and the Heinie that was installed on the STI Tactical.


You can see where the Heinie was filed by the factory.

Using a triangle file, I filed the rear part of the dovetail down to size.  Take your time when filing because you can always take more off if needed.




Once the sight dovetails were the same size, i broke the edges of the lower corners of the dovetail, just like the factory did.


I didn't take a picture, but i used Brownell's Formula 44/40 cold blue to coat the areas that I filed.

I fit the sights so that they start about 1/3 of the way before I use my sight pusher and put a drop of blue Loctite on the dovetail as an extra measure so that the sight won't come loose.
